The secondary use of health data is becoming increasingly central to Europe’s digital health transformation, particularly in the context of the European Health Data Space and the growing role of artificial intelligence. However, despite significant investments in data infrastructures and digital health initiatives, many organisations still face challenges in translating data availability into real-world impact. Health data is often fragmented, insufficiently structured and not fully interoperable, limiting its effective use for research, innovation, policy-making and clinical decision support.
On May 14, at 09:30 CET, Health Cluster Portugal, in collaboration with vitagroup, will host the webinar “Are We Wasting the Potential of Health Data?”, structured as a roundtable discussion bringing together complementary perspectives across the health data value chain, including healthcare organisations and data providers, policy and regulatory stakeholders, and technology experts.
The discussion will focus on what is needed to make the secondary use of health data truly operational, moving beyond ambition towards practical implementation. Key topics will include data quality as a critical bottleneck, the need for structured and interoperable data at the point of care, the role of scalable architectures and interoperability standards, and the alignment between clinical practice, regulatory frameworks and technological solutions.
This webinar is framed within the HeliX project, a European initiative focused on enabling secure, privacy-preserving access to distributed health data through federated approaches. HeliX connects data providers and data users without requiring data to leave its original location, supporting the development of scalable and compliant data ecosystems aligned with the objectives of the European Health Data Space.
The session will feature Daniel Beirão, Invited Professor - MEDCIDS Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, Deputy Clinical Director- Hospital da Luz Guimarães, Vice-Chair, - HIMSS Iberian Community (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society); Michał Dybowski, President of the Global Healthcare Travel Council and representative of Healthcare Poland in the HeliX project; and Luis Marco Ruiz, Senior Technical Consultant at vitagroup, bringing clinical, policy and technological perspectives to the discussion.
