About

The Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) is a R&D; institute affiliated with the University of Coimbra, committed to foster and conduct fundamental and translational research and advanced training in biomedical sciences. It was the first recognized Associated Laboratory in Portugal and has been consistently evaluated as “excellent” in the national performance assessments.

CNC brings together researchers from the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Life Sciences, as well as clinicians and collaborators from the pharmaceutical industry. Its core research lines are 1) Neuroscience & Brain Diseases, 2) Metabolism, Aging & Disease and 3) Stem Cell & Molecular Therapies, with remarkable achievements in the study of degenerative processes and associated mechanisms of protection and regeneration, along with the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

CNC also provides a rich environment for fundamental research to be translated into clinical or marketable applications, given its strategic partnerships with the University Hospitals (CHUC) and the BIOCANT biotechnology park that hosts 30% of the biotech companies in Portugal.
As part of its commitment to training new researchers on the forefront areas of health sciences, CNC runs its own doctoral programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) and is active partner in the strategic advanced training international programmes MIT Portugal and Harvard Medical School (HMS) Portugal.
