Catarina Resende de Oliveira
Member of the Board

Catarina Isabel Neno Resende de Oliveira awarded her MD PhD in Neurology in 1984 at the University of Coimbra.

Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra and Consultant of Neurology at the Neurological Clinic, in the Coimbra University Hospital,  she is President of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, and director of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of Coimbra where she coordinates the scientific area of Neuroscience and Disease.
Research in this area has been particulary effective in the understanding of the molecular Mechanismes of Neuroprotection and in promoting translation research of Neurodegeneration disorders.

Her main interst in research is focused in the mechanisms of aging and in the disorders for which aging is a risk factor, trying to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration induced by amyloidogenic peptides, particularly on the signalling role of mitochondria in a neuronal death.

She has coordinated several scientific projects on brain aging and dementia; cellular response to oxidative stress and cell signalling, mitochondrial function and relationship between diabetes and neurodegerative disorders.

Her contributions to science are described in over 200 publications, dealing with biochemical, molecular and genetic studies aiming to elucidate the mechanisms of neurodegeneration, occurring in prion and Alzheimer’s dementia, in order to identify biomarkers of disease and new targets for therapeutical intervention.

During her carreer in science, she supervised 17 PhD students and 17 Master students.
She has been reviewer for FCT Welcome Trust and Alzheimer´s Association is and Associate Editor of Journal of Alzheimer´s Disease.

In 2006 she awarded the Prize ” Estímulo à Excelência “, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), and in 2008 the Prize “ Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria” in Aging, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
